Has your small job electrician gone AWOL?

The answer is no!

I've been a bit slow with correspondence and not answering phone calls as swiftly as I should but there's good reason! I'm not on paternity leave after my first baby came 3 weeks early.

Fear not! Your small jobs such as fuseboard upgrades, and replacement lights are still being carried out by our other electrician, Josh. He's been holding the fort whilst I've been catching up on sleep.

Lets talk dimmers and dimming lights.

Dimmers are great, but also not great. They can create a nice ambience in your home but sometimes you'll be hearing a buzzing noise or your LED bulbs will be flickering.

As more people used a registered electrician to install them, more resources were put in to improving them.

It still takes some planning and reading instructions but these days dimmers are so much better quality and it's rare to get flickering lights or buzzing dimmers.

Are you ready?

Yes, we're local, registered electricians priding ourselves on the work we do carrying out those small electrical jobs that most electricians simply don't want. But...

Smoke alarms in your home

So many times when viewing jobs I see no smoke alarms, or battery smoke alarms with no battery in and it amazes me that such an easy fix that could potentially save a life, hasn't been carried out!

As homeowners, there's currently no requirement for you to have any form of fire detection in your home but a lot of people will have 1, maybe 2 battery powered smoke alarms. Rarely is there maintenance carried out on these alarms.

Electricians Halloween hunt in Corsham

Last year, because of lockdown and COVID and nobody actually wanting to go out and trick-or-treat, I did a spur of the moment Halloween treasure hunt in Corsham. The rules were simple, I got some Halloween themed decorated pebbles and I hid them in Corsham. If you found the rock, get in touch with your trusted electrician and trade the rock in for a jar of sweets.

The hunt last year appeared to be quite popular and even with COVID restrictions easing, I'm doing the same again this year as something to do for the community.

5 Tips for choosing an electrician in Corsham

Are you looking for tips for hiring an electrician? How do you find a high quality electrician with so many out there?

In this article, explore what to look for when hiring an electrician.

Tip 1 - Local recommendations

As an electrician a lot of my work comes from word of mouth and it does for a lot of other trades too. Ask around for recommendations so you have a few local electricians to pick from.

Using the correct types of cable

As electricians, we need to properly design a circuit and use materials that are suitable for it's location. Regulations change which means a few years ago the circuit may have been designed differently. A common difference is the use of grey PVC cable for outside wall lights i.e. decorative lights or flood lights. You'll often see a small amount of grey cable coming straight out of the wall and in to the back of a light.

The problem with cheap electrical installation condition reports.

I've been tied about what I should create a blog about and I had a couple of options lined up, one on LED lighting where I was going to talk about the benefits on replacing halogens for LED and talk a bit about how LED lights work with an LED driver, another idea was to talk about RCD protection and why upgrading your fuseboard to include RCBOs and possibly a surge protective device is a great thing to do.

Take Care When Selecting an Electrician!!

Many Electricians in Bath and West Wiltshire are simply not interested in small electrical works. They want the choice jobs, and will drop you like a hot potato when a bigger, supposedly more lucrative, project comes in.

Others advertise as electricians having no qualifications.  They thrive on the basis that you don’t understand what they do and, as a result, overcharge for shoddy, and often dangerous, work.

I set up Watt & Co. Electrical in order to fill a gap in the domestic sector. I want to provide you with a quality service that provides you with exactly what you need from an electrician.
